Dangers/Disadvantages
Insoluble fiber is removed during the juicing process. This allows for
easier digestion but eating solid foods will help you reach satiety and
keep you feeling full longer than drinking a meal. Also, the insoluble
fiber taken out of the juicing process is important for GI health. It
serves to clean the digestive tract as a way to get rid of plaque and
trapped toxins. What also occurs when there is no fiber along with
consuming food in the liquid state are quick trips to the bathroom.
Liquid passes through the digestive tract much more quickly than solid
foods.
A juice cleanse contains no protein. Whatever trace amount of protein
that is found in the produce used to make juice, the juicing process
strips them of these and vitamins and minerals (D, E, B, E, F, As, and
fiber). This will cause a loss in muscle mass, your metabolic rate will
slow down, and ultimately your body will not “burn” body fat as well.
There are also no fats in a juice cleanse. Fats are vital in transporting
and absorbing fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K which are important
for certain hormones to function optimally.
Drinking these juices will cause spikes in blood sugar and blood
sugar crashes throughout the day. The fiber that is taken out of the
food during the juicing process helps slow down the absorption rate,
therefore causing less of a rise in blood sugar. These spikes and
crashes will leave you with the feeling of being lightheaded and dizzy.
This dizziness and lightheadedness may also be attributed to being
slightly hypotensive because there is no sodium in this diet.
People most often use juice cleanses a detox for the body, but your
body doesn’t need a detox. Your body comes with a built-in detox
machine, aka the kidneys and liver. If you eat a healthy diet, most of
the time your body will naturally detox itself every day.
The best way to “detox” is through healthy eating, exercise, and
time out in the sunshine.
