What Do You Think Will Happen If….? How to Use Questioning
Strategies to Make Math Talk More Productive
The Mathematical Practices empower students to use math and to think mathematically.
Research tells us that quality mathematical discourse not only helps students share their
thinking, but also helps guide the thought process. The goal of this session is to discuss how
we can use questioning strategies to help make the math talk in our classrooms more
intentional and productive. Participants will have the opportunity to:
• Learn about the research behind the importance of math talk and how it helps students with
the Mathematical Practices.
• Discuss questioning strategies for each of the Mathematical Practices.
• Participate in classroom scenarios at various grade levels.
