Hawaiian Flag Old. 1890s to 1930s. eBay purchase in 2011. 75"x 79" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Medium weight.
Backing: Cotton muslin. Edge: Separate red with some restoration. Piecing: Appliqués done finely by hand.
Flags are assembled by machine. Quilting: Straight lines ¾" apart over the straight areas; echo quilting
around central motif, 6 stitches per inch. Condition: Poor. The whites have browned. The blue in particular
has faded or has voids. Comment: Useful to a collection only as an exemplar of what a traditional Hawaiian
flag quilt is supposed to look like. The vendor, from Hawaii, claims to have purchased it from a Hawaiian
estate.
