Cigarette Premiums 1920s. Purchased from a Seattle area antique show or shop prior to 2003. 55"x61" Fab-
ric: Patches sold as premiums with packs of cigarettes, cotton flannel. Batting: None. Backing: Gray and
pink cotton blanket. Edge: Back is brought to the front ¼" and machine stitched. Piecing: By machine.
Quilting: None. Condition: Good. Of 86 patches, a dozen reds have bled. The back has significant areas
of rust-colored stain. Comment: Note that the US flag near the center has 48 stars, so this was made after
the admission of Arizona, even though cigarette felts began to disappear from products during WWI.
A smaller U.S. flag has six rows of 7 stars. The motifs are nations and Indians. Nations include Zion,
Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, and Servia and Bulgaria which were subsumed in Yugoslavia for years.
