Blumrich Art Quilt, "Uncle Sam" Contemporary, 1986. Created by Stephen Blumrich. Purchased prior to
2003. 22"x31" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: None. Backing: Muslin. Edge: Knife edge. Piecing: Machine. Quilting:
Tied with red yarn at about the navel of each figure, knotted on the back. Condition: Excellent. Comment:
This was designed by a graphic designer of some notoriety, and is NOT, as sometimes advertised, the work
of an African-American folk artist. Blumrich was born in Gotha, Germany, in 1941, and is a resident of
Tullahama, Tennessee. The Smithsonian Institute purchased three of his hand puppets in batik in 1975.
He has been associated with the Surface Design Association. The piece is marked on the back with his
copyright.
