my mom had a
quilt like that
Ocean Waves Amish Style After 1925 based on the bias tape binding. Antique mall purchase, Bend, OR, in
1990s. 62"x79½" Fabric: Cotton. Batting: Light weight cotton. Backing: Black cotton. Edge: Manufactured
tape machine stitched to the front and caught by hand in back. Piecing: By machine. Quilting: By hand
in thick black thread. Black centers to the motif are a 2¾" grid. A line of quilting follows the lines of the
hypotenuses of the triangles. The red and blue borders have a line down the middle. The black border has
cables well matched at the corners. Condition: Very good. The black has faded consistent with washing.
One blue triangle has a 3 /8" hole. Comment: Done in the Amish style. The quilt was collected before the
flood of imitative Chinese exports, does not have the characteristic Chinese knife edge, and bears no evi-
dence of ever having had a label or tag. Nor does it have any tag by a later quilter proud of her work. Age
could be as late as late 20th century imitation, but has been used and washed enough to fade the black. I
doubt a modern quilter would use up such a work. I’m judging it to be no later than 1950.
