Professor only two days a week as she was going to the
University studying psychology at night.
On the other days, she was studying with her
grandmother Nana Grace Rose, in short Nana Grace,
who lived next door to the mansion.
Although Aroha seemed to really have a deep love
for her grandmother, she also seemed frustrated by her
demanding ways. She tended to isolate Aroha and
didn’t really allow her any time for fun or a private life.
Aroha felt the weight of the requirement to be the
carrier of the knowledge and wisdom Nana Grace was
passing down.

studying with her grandmother and why it would be so
demanding, but, hey it was a culture I knew nothing
about. Although, I must admit, I was very curious to
know more. As they say watch out what you ask for ….
When our baskets were full we turned to leave and
we both noticed the mist climbing the mountain. Aroha
said, “Beautiful isn’t she?”
I was curious why she said “She”. So, Aroha
explained that there are many Maori tribes and that her
family tribe was born of the mist.
The following is the story she told me of her people.
