Chapter 5
J.E.A. Foundation and the Professor

So, my work began at the J.E.A. Foundation with
my main focus not in a lab but right there on the
Professor’s land.

I would be responsible for creating the new kumara
section as the basis of my experiments, while also taking
over responsibilities for organizing and caring for the
other numerous amazing plant species, on what was
now referred to by Aroha, as the neglected farm. It was
agreed that we would create perimeters for my work
and if they were accomplished I would get my degree.
The Professor assured me that he had established a
relationship with the local University in Palmerston
North called Massey and that he would formalize my
Doctorate. At first, it seemed a little daunting but hey, I
was getting free room and board and living in paradise,
so on with the show.

Unbeknown to me, back home in California my Aunt Cindy
had discovered that I was in New Zealand and she was having
somewhat of a nervous breakdown. She had found my
itinerary, which my cousin was supposed to keep hidden, and
became hysterical. Uncle Mike has always been the rational one
and he tried to calm her down but she wasn’t in a calm down
mood.
