It really saddened me that the Professor had
suffered such a tragic loss. Just a short time ago, I
would have never been able to feel the depth of such a
loss, but now I definitely could.
Another day as Aroha was getting ready to leave
she picked up a large canvas sack and it slipped right
out of her hand onto the floor. As I jumped up to help
her, a large beautiful green stone rolled out of the bag
and under the couch. I retrieved it for her and was
taken by how magnificent it was.
She explained it was her pounamu, a sacred stone
believed by the Maori to carry considerable spiritual
power. She had been gifted her stone by her parents. It
was her most precious possession.
Right then, the Professor walked by and added his
two cents … “Yes, it is also known as nephrite jade, a
lovely stone exclusive to New Zealand and found in
great abundance in the Arahura River in the south
island of New Zealand - a place that he had visited
often in the summers when home from boarding school
in London.
‘Spiritual power’ was somewhat questionable to
him, but he did admire the beauty of the stone.
Aroha just shook her head and told the Professor,
“You just have to invite it in and be open to the
possibility that all God’s creations have purpose and
