11. The Preposition





          A  preposition  is  a  word  placed  before  a  noun  or  pronoun  to  show  its  relation  with
          something else in the sentence.


          Prepositions are usually placed before their objects.

          Example : The fruits are in a basket       . (In the given sentence, ‘in’    is the preposition and the
                       object is a basket  .)

          Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another part of a
          sentence.


          Types of Preposition

          1.  Preposition of Place and Position :

               Preposition  of  place  and  position  often  indicates  the  position  of  something  with
                respect to something else or give us information about the place where it is kept or lies.

               Examples :     (i)  There is a handle on    the door.

                              (ii)  Distribute these mangoes between          Johan and Tom.


               In the above sentences, 'on'       and 'between'     are prepositions. Some other        Prepositions
                of Place and Position are :

               in, at, under, across, among, above, below, near, upon, beside, behind, etc.

               'At' and 'in' (As Preposition of Place)

               'At' is used :

               (a)  before small towns and villages.

               (b)  before nouns that show a relation of time.
