'In' is used :
(a) before large towns and countries.
in
Example : My father lives Delhi.
(b) with the names of year and month.

Example : Gandhiji died 1948.
'On' and 'Upon’
'On' is used :
(a) for things at rest.
Example : The pen is on the table.
(b) to denote support and concern.
Example : The cows live on grass.
'Upon' is used :
for things in motion.
Example : The cat jumped upon the table.
'Over' is used :
(a) to denote crossing something and going to the other side.
Example : The dog jumped over the wall.
(b) in the sense of beyond.
Example : My friend plays over there.
'Above' is used :
(a) in the sense of higher place or position than somebody/something.
Example : God is above us all.
(b) to mean more than something.
Example : The price of this table is above two hundred rupees.
