Editor’s note:
In the event of serious
delay, passengers
could be refunded
instantly by paying
less or nothing at all,
rather than waiting for
a claim to be

Introduce a deferred payment system for airline tickets
such that passengers pay only on arrival at their
destination. The airlines would swipe passengers’ credit
cards on departure but only charge them when they
disembark. Although saving on the cost of a flight would
offer scant compensation following a fatal crash, the
system might further encourage airline safety.

Produce a television special introducing a new
impressionist. Major celebrities would be secretly
invited to overdub the mimic’s attempts with their
actual voices thereby creating the illusion of
astonishing talent in an unknown individual. At some
point after the broadcast, the hoax would be exposed
114but, as it will have been well-loved celebrities who have
tricked the public, the show might well be forgiven and
could even continue into a series.
