MRS. WEBB: A ver. Debe tener cerca de dieciséis.
MRS. WEBB: Let’s see. He must be almost sixteen.

EMILY: Mamá, hice una presentación en clase y me fue muy bien.
EMILY: Mama, I made a speech in class today and I was very good.

MRS. WEBB: Debes mostrarle lo que hiciste a tu padre a la hora de la comida. ¿De
qué se trataba?
MRS. WEBB: You must recite it to your father at supper. What was it about?

EMILY: Sobre la compra de Luisiana. Me quedó tan fluido como un hilo de seda que
corre por una bobina. Voy a dedicarme a hacer discursos toda mi vida. – Mamá, ¿están
bien así?
EMILY: The Louisiana Purchase. It was like silk off a spool. I’m going to make speech-
es all my life. – Mama, are these big enough?

MRS. WEBB: Trata de no cortarlas tanto, si puedes.
MRS. WEBB: Try and get them a little bigger if you can.

EMILY: Mamá, quiero que seas sincera conmigo y me digas algo…
EMILY: Mama, will you answer me a question, serious?

MRS. WEBB: ¿Qué? Dime.
MRS. WEBB: What? Tell me.

EMILY: Mamá, ¿crees que soy atractiva?
EMILY: Mama, am I good looking?

MRS. WEBB: Claro que sí. Todos mis hijos tienen buenas facciones; me avergonzaría
si no fuera asi.
MRS. WEBB: Yes, of course you are. All my children have got good features; I’d be
ashamed if they hadn’t.

EMILY: Pero mamá, no es eso lo que quiero preguntarte. Te pregunto si soy bonita.
EMILY: Oh, Mama, that’s not what I mean. What I mean is: am I pretty?

MRS. WEBB: Ya te lo he dicho, sí lo eres. Y basta. Eres joven y tienes una buena
cara. ¡Qué tonterías te traes!
