RISK ASSESSMENT & SAFE SYSTEM OF WORK HSF18
15 Slips Trips and Note 1. The Hydraulic Pipe Connections:
Falls
Whilst Coupling up to a Trailer:
1. Un-connect the (right) female connection first
2. Un-connect the (left) male connection second
Whilst Un-coupling from a Trailer:
1. Connect the (left) male connection first
2. Connect the (right) female connection second
There may be times when trying to connect the male hydraulic pipe
(Image 1) that the fluid has built up to such a degree that the pressure
within the pipe is preventing the connection. If so. Place a cloth (image
2) onto the catwalk and press down gently onto male connection.
Image 1 Image 2
This will release a small amount of hydraulic fluid, thus releasing the pressure in the pipe. Connection should now be made easier. If
not defect the pipe with the transport office.
Note 2. Suspension.
Lowering the suspension before separating the unit from the trailer whilst coupling up or
uncoupling the trailer will prevent any damage to the trailer legs.
Note 3. A Systematic Procedure.
Coupling up to a trailer or uncoupling from a trailer must be carried out correctly and in a systematic order. Drivers need to become
familiar with either of the two procedures listed above. During the process of coupling or uncoupling if the driver is interrupted or
distracted away from the task in hand then he or she should take a moment before returning to the task and gather their thoughts
and then re-address the procedure. This will prevent the driver from making mistakes and forgetting aspects of the coupling or
uncoupling procedure.
