            Vitamin
              Invented by FG Hopkin.
              Coined by C Funk.
              Vitamin is an organic compound.

              They provide no calories, regulate chemical reactions occurs in metabolism of the body.
              Two groups – Fat soluble and Water soluble vitamins.
              Fat soluble vitamins – Vitamin A, D, E and K.
              Water soluble vitamins – Vitamin B and C.
            Vitamins, their sources and deficiency

            Vitamin A
              Chemical name – Retinol.
              Deficiency disease – Night blindness.
              Source – Orange, green, vegetables, carrots, pumpkin and spinach.
            Vitamin D

              Chemical name – Calciferol.
              Deficiency disease – Rickets and Osteomalacia.
              Source – Fish, eggs, liver and mushrooms.
            Vitamin E
              Chemical name – Tocopherol.
              Deficiency disease – Infertility.
              Source – Many fruits and vegetables.
            Vitamin K
              Chemical name – Phylloquinone.
              Deficiency disease – Non-clotting of blood.
              Source – Green vegetables.
            Vitamin B1
              Chemical name – Thiamine.
              Deficiency disease – Beriberi.
              Source – Oatmeal, rice, vegetables, cauliflower, potatoes, liver and eggs.
            Vitamin B2
              Chemical name – Riboflavin.
              Deficiency disease – Cracking of skin, reddish eye, cracking of tongue.

              Source – Daily products, bananas, popcorn and green beans.
            Vitamin B3
              Chemical name – Niacin and nicotinic acid.
              Deficiency disease – Pellagra.
              Source – Meat, broccoli and avocados.
            Vitamin B5
              Chemical name – Pantothenic acid.
              Deficiency disease – Premature greying of hair.
              Source – Meat, fish, eggs, mushrooms and many vegetables.
            Vitamin B6
              Chemical name – Pyridoxine.
