feel that since we belong to the ordinary group we cannot participate
in a competition with extraordinary people.
Since we start taking so much interest in the rank holders’ lives, we
start following them, and imitating them, in our lives as well. They are
merely our contemporaries; yet we start thinking of them as our
gurus, and also feel that we are beneath them. We start worshipping
them. If we already have the feeling of inferiority complex within us,
such a situation, worsens it further. This is when we decide to
become a disciple of anybody without giving it a second thought.
But if we truly have to learn something from a meritorious student,
we should learn about his strategy for the examinations, what all
books he studied from, what are the subjects or areas where we can
score good? the points he took care of, his mistakes and how he
rectified them. we should try and learn from his experience. This is
all that we need to know and learn about the topper. Nothing beyond
this. We don’t even have to follow him on social media. We don’t
have to know about his lifestyle, relationship status etc. His personal
life is none of our concerns and we will be wasting our time and take
a step back in our preparation, if we do that.
You will start developing the misconception that doing all these
things—which are not going to have any kind of impact on your
results—will help you become like them and you will also get high
marks.
If there are one lakh people appearing for an examination for only
1,000 seats, then not more than 1,000 people are going to be
selected. This does not mean that you waste time finding more about
the people who have been selected. They were selected because
they did the basic things in a better way. Remember: You are no less
than any of them. Don’t make them your idols and start worshipping
them. If you are too quick to follow them, you cannot realize your
true potential. You can never assess your capabilities if you blindly
imitate others. Why do you have to follow others? Why can you not
refine and redefine yourself? Why can you not spend your time and
energy in making yourself better?
