CONCEPTS – When given the opportunity to play with concepts, often
weird and wonderful conversations emerge about sometimes taboo or difficult
experiences. Take death for instance, from our experience when children
engage in play involving recapitulative play opportunities such as skinning and
gutting animals, chat often turns to the children’s own experience of death,
whether that be a pet or a family member. This gives children the opportunity to
talk through their experience of the concept of death. There are many other
concepts like time, space and religion that children need to be able to play with
in order to make sense of them.
