through the class secretary. The form is available from OSSD
upon request.
2.3.10.1.2. A student may be accepted in class even after being late for
15 minutes but the student should be marked absent during
that session. If a student is habitually late, the faculty member
should refer the student to the DSSD for appropriate sanction.
2.3.10.1.3. Any absence incurred immediately after a short vacation
(Christmas, Election Day, and others) is normally considered
unexcused unless there is a clear and valid reason for the
absence.
2.3.10.2. Classroom Discipline
2.3.10.2.1. Faculty members must ensure that students are doing meaningful tasks
inside the classroom. Disruptive behaviors are discouraged. However,
no faculty member should inflict corporal punishment on offending
students; nor should he/she make deductions in their scholastic ratings
for acts that are clearly not manifestations of poor scholarship.
Violations of existing University policies are referred to the DSSD
following the provisions of the Student Manual
2.3.10.3. Class Participation
2.3.10.3.1. Class participation of students means their being present and attentive
in class. When applicable, at least 10% of the final grade should be
accorded to class participation. With class participation, students are
encouraged to interact by reciting, asking questions and by taking part
in group activities, but these are not necessary to receive full credit.
Faculty members should also conduct a period of recitation to test
students’ knowledge, reasoning/thinking ability and preparation.
2.3.10.4. Evaluating Student Performance
2.3.10.4.1. Faculty members should evaluate students’ performance objectively by
constructing valid and reliable tests and examinations.
2.3.10.4.2. All quizzes and test papers should be returned promptly to the students
after the test for immediate feedback.
2.3.10.4.3. A new set of questions must be prepared for a special midterm or final
examination should this be needed.
2.3.10.4.4. Exemptions from taking the final examinations may be extended to
deserving students for exemplary academic performance. They may
opt to retain their grades.
2.3.10.4.5. Course professors/teachers should identify students with academic
difficulty such as those failing a mid-term examination, having
excessive absences, failing to submit a required paper and others, and
inform them of their class standing. Faculty members should be
sympathetic to students who seek assistance for the proper course of
action to be taken to improve their performance. They should give
regular feedback to the students.
2.3.11. Medium of Instruction
2.3.11.1. An institution adopting the Bilingual Education Policy uses Filipino and English as
media of instruction and communication. Specifically, this means that Filipino and
English shall be used as media of instruction in definite subjects taking into account
the nature of the discipline and the learners’ needs.
2.3.11.2. Faculty members are expected to express themselves fluently in English. Outside
the classroom, faculty members are encouraged to maintain conversations in
English, especially when talking to students.
2.3.12. Preparation of Course Syllabi/Other Requirements
2.3.12.1. Each College has a compilation of subject syllabi submitted by each faculty
member. Syllabi should be updated and submitted before the start of classes.
Faculty members handling the same subjects should cooperate to update the
course syllabi in terms of content and reforms.
2.3.12.2. The faculty member should be guided by the course syllabus.
