           Increasing Analgesic Prescription for

           Patient with Post-Extraction Pain in

           KP Taman Intan

SELECTION OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT :

A retrospective study in Klinik Pergigian Taman Intan showed a low rate of analgesic prescription for

patients with post-extraction pain with a percentage of only 37.9% where data was collected from
July to August 2021. This study aimed to decrease post-extraction pain by appropriately allocating

the analgesic prescriptions to targeted and high risk patients.

           PROCESS OF GATHERING INFORMATION :

A prospective study was carried out on patients who requested simple tooth extraction at Klinik

Pergigian Taman Intan from November 2021 to February 2023 throughout the interventions.

           ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION :
There is significant association between post-extraction pain with patients with existing pre-

extraction pain and the number of roots of extracted tooth.

           STRATEGIES FOR CHANGE :

Data sheet form and phone calls used to collect information regarding post-extraction pain, use of
analgesic and adherence to post-operative instructions. Video was played at the waiting area to

educate patients about post-extraction instructions and complications. Post-extraction instruction

           sheet was given.

           EFFECT OF CHANGE :

Significant improvement in the percentage of patients with post-extraction pain prescribed with
analgesic, which has increased from 37.9 % during pre-remedial stage up to 52.8% in 1st cycle and

further increase up to 93.3% in 2nd cycle which later slightly reduced to 88.5% during 3rd cycle. The

           ANBA increased 40.5%.

           THE NEXT STEP :
The result obtained from the intervention to be fully reviewed by Oral Health Division of Ministry of

Health to be shared with other dental clinics. Further study can be carried out to find in more depth

the optimum number of analgesics that should be prescribed and the association between factors of
number of teeth extracted and time of tooth extraction to the post-extraction pain with bigger sample

           size
