30 | SEMESTER SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS
NATIONAL FUTSAL SUCCESS FOR OWEN
During the October holiday break, Owen Harris
(Year 11) represented NSW in the National Futsal
Tournament in Queensland.
In a fantastic result, Owen’s team won the
Championship and Owen also gained MVP
honours for the Grand Final.
As a result of his performance in the tournament,
and his team’s win, Owen was been selected in an
Australian team to tour Chile July, 2020, however,
he has declined this offer due to his commitment to his HSC studies.
In January of this year, Owen competed in the National Club
Championship and, with his team finishing 3rd, he was offered a position in
an Australian team to play in Italy in a European Nations competition.
SIBLINGS’ SUCCESS
At the end of Term 3, Mirah Larkin (Year 10, pictured below left, runner No. 4) competed at the NSW All Schools’
Championships. In the 2,000m Steeplechase, Mirah had a fantastic run and finished in 3 place, which qualified her
rd
to compete at the Australian Athletics Championships in March, 2020.
Meanwhile, younger brother Casper (Year 8, pictured below right, wearing the visor) competed at the same
Championships in both the 2,000m and 3,000m Steeplechase events. Whilst he just missed qualifying for the next
level, Casper did achieve personal bests in these events. A week later, Casper competed for Katoomba Swim Club
at the Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club’s 2019 Nutrition Station Open Water Carnival at the Regatta Centre at
Penrith. Casper competed in the 5km event and finished with a time of 1:13 hr/min, qualifying to compete in this
event at a State level.
MATILDA’S HEADING FOR NATIONALS
In November, Matilda Merry
(Year 11) competed at the State
Bouldering Competition in Sydney.
For the uninitiated, Bouldering is
a form of rock climbing without
the benefit of safety equipment
or ropes. The sport not only tests
fitness and balance, but involves
constant problem-solving.

In an outstanding result, Matilda finished in 2 place
in her age group. Matilda’s younger brother, Otto
(Year 7) is also involved in the sport and, in the same
competition, finished in 10 place. Matilda’s podium
th
finish has led to her qualification for the National
Competition, to be held early in 2020.
