A PINK-BLUE SHIRT (A PLAY)

Theme: Social bias, prejudice, and reclaiming dignity.

Characters:

• I – The protagonist

• Jonathan (J) – Friend

Scene: A simple drawing room. A chair, a small table. I sits, looking pensive. Jonathan enters.

J: (entering, concerned) How is your father now? I heard he’s been unwell.

I: Come in. (gestures) He’s a little better. Hopefully, he’ll be discharged soon.

J: That’s a relief. Are you alone now? Where’s Nina?

I: She’s with her parents for the week.

(Doorbell rings.)

I: Who… could that be? I wasn’t expecting anyone.
(Walks to the door, glances outside, sees a small packet.)
Ah… a packet. No name, only the address.

J: Maybe it’s a gift for you.

I: Could be, but maybe not. How would I know?

J: It came to your house. That makes it yours. Open it.

(I hesitates, then opens the packet. A pink-blue shirt falls out. I picks it up, examining it.)

I: A pink-blue shirt… and it’s my size.

J: (smirks) Ah… I see your secret. You know those who wear pink with shades of blue, don’t you?

I: (firmly) No. I don’t. I don’t associate the color with anything.

J: (leans closer) Really? Then how… would anyone know your address… or your size?

I: I don’t know. I’m not one of them that you are thinking of. And I don’t judge them—they’re
fine people.

J: Maybe. But society doesn’t care. People will always assume.
