RAINY NIGHT
Outside, the night was absolute—
a vast, unbroken darkness.
No shape, no shadow,
only the waiting silence.
Then I heard it—
rain arriving from a distance,
like soft footsteps on the sky.
It began gently,
a smooth, sobering whisper,
each drop touching earth
with patient certainty.
Now and then,
a firmer thud—
a reminder of presence.
It became a lullaby,
ancient and uncomposed,
sung not for an audience
but for weary souls.
The day had been warm, restless,
heavy with tasks and thoughts.
My body ached;
my mind, more so.
I stood by the window.
My eyes searched the darkness
and found nothing.
But my ears opened wide—
and there was the rain,
faithful and steady.
Only a week ago
it had roared with thunder,
struck hard with hail,
as if the sky itself were unsettled.
Tonight it chose gentleness.
Perhaps this too
is Mother Nature’s quiet law—
fury and calm
taking turns.
