Individual component is eluted from the column in descending
order according to their molecular size

 Compound with large size will be totally excluded, eluted
first.

 Smaller particles (with size less than the gel pore size) will
enter the pores and retained for longer time in the gel, eluted
last.

 Particles with intermediate size will retained according to
their size and will eluted second to the large particle

 finally, pure mobile phase is eluted

Classification

1-Gel filtration (GFC):
for water soluble compounds, stationary phase is sephadex (soft
gel)

2-Gel permeation (GPC):
for organic solvent soluble compounds, stationary phase can be
polystyrene cross linked or glass beads or porous silica (hard gel)
