Visualization
For colored compounds, the spots can be directly observed after
development.
For colorless compounds, a visualization method is needed.
Destructive or non-destructive methods.

1-Non-destructive methods
iodine vapors
Most organic compounds will form a dark-brownish spots.
NH4OH

Ultraviolet (UV) light.
using silica gel F254 plate,
the spot will appear as a dark
spot on a fluorescence
background (quenched spots)

2- Destructive methods using Spray reagents:
Conc. H2SO4, Anisaldehyde/H2SO4,
FeCl3, Dragendorrf's, Ninhydrin, 3,5 dinitro benzoic acid
