Doxorubicin is a cytotoxic anthracycline antibiotic isolated
fromcultures of mutated Streptomyces. It is red colored
antibiotic There are two proposed mechanisms of action:
(i) intercalation into DNA. It stabilizes the topoisomerase II
complex after it has broken the DNA chain, preventing the
DNAdouble helix from being resealed and thereby stopping
the process of replication.
(ii) generation of quinone type free radicals that damage
cellularmembranes, DNA and proteins
