General treatment approach
• Infectious diarrhea ..self-limiting
• Mild, moderate, uncomplicated…by symptomatic relief (OTC drugs)
&fluid& electrolyte replacement replacement (ORS)
• Diet (Current guidelines recommend withholding food no longer than
24 hours and encourage the reintroduction of a normal, age-
appropriate diet once the patient has been rehydrated, which should
take no longer than 34 hours to accomplish.
• Normal function is often restored in 24 to 72 hrs without additional
treatment)
• Severe diarrhea requires immediate medical evaluation (IV fluid

Non-pharmacological treatment
• ORS =Oral rehydration solution (low glucose or
dextrose (2%) facilitate water & sodium absorption &
caloric support)…especially in infants
• Rice syrup (cpx carbohydrate instead of glucose)
• Common household oral solutions ( cola, apple juice,
seven up) not recommended <6yrs, good for mild self
limiting in some patients , not in severe due to high
carbohydrate, worsen diarrhea
