Loperamide

• Synthetic opioid agonist
5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists

• Loperamide is an anticholinergic drug that is used to reduce or stop
diarrhea, including traveler’s diarrhea, Slow intestinal motility, allowing
absorption of electrolytes & water (antiperistaltic)
• Decrease intestinal secretions (antisecretory)
• > morphine (potent)
• < CNS side effects

• Contraindications

• Children < 6yrs
• High fever, blood, mucus in stools
• Not in dysentry (ileus )
