Parenterals: Excipients & additives

                             Buffers

Why?
• Buffers are included in parenteral products to maintain the pH of the

product at the desired optimum value.
• Changes in pH may arise due to interactions between an ingredient

in the formulation and the container, or from changes in storage
   temperature.

  Parenterals: Excipients & additives

                              Buffers

  Buffer considerations:
  • Parenteral products should be formulated to possess sufficient buffer

capacity to maintain proper product pH as well as be readily
overcome by the biological fluids. This way, they won’t disturb the
      body's buffering systems when injected.
  • LVP should not contain a pH buffer as the blood already has a buffer
effect property that could compete with the injected drug product.
