  Parenterals: Excipients & additives

  When?
  • Antimicrobial preservatives are added to multiple-dose injections

(only SVP), unless it has sufficient antimicrobial properties to be self-
preserving. Excipients such as ethanol, glycerol and propylene glycol
which may be added to a formulation as co-solvents to aid drug
dissolution also will provide an antimicrobial effect.
