Parenterals: Containers & packaging
Container form: single-dose
Ampoules
• After opening, the contents of the ampoule should be withdrawn into a
syringe through a filter needle (to trap glass particles during breaking
the neck). The filter needle is then replaced with a regular needle.
• If a filter needle is not available, withdrawal of glass can be minimized
by tilting the ampoule slightly and avoiding the outer surface of the
neck of the ampoule. The needle should not be lowered to the bottom
of the ampoule but held slightly above to avoid drawing glass into the
syringe.

• Plastic ampoules are prepared
using a highly automated process
(costly).
• The sealed ampoule is opened by
twisting off the lid and very few

contaminate the product.
