Parenterals: Containers & packaging

                    General requirements

  • Containers and closures must not interact physically or chemically
with the preparation (drug or excipients).

  • They should also be robust enough to withstand the chosen
      sterilization process.

  • Containers should be effectively sealed to prevent the enclosed
medicine becoming contaminated with microorganisms or other
contaminants during storage prior to use.

  Parenterals: Containers & packaging

                    General requirements

 • Because it is impossible in practice to transfer the entire volume of a
single-dose container or the last dose in a multiple-dose container into
a syringe, a slight excess in volume of the contents of ampuls and
vials over the labeled size or volume of the package is permitted.

 • Dry powders are packaged in containers large enough to permit
proper shaking with the liquid component during reconstitution.
