Active constituents:
1- The drug contains bitter substances (iridoide monoterpenes):
including harpagoside (extremely bitter).
2- Phenylethanol glycosides.
3- Oligosaccharides

Actions
• Appetite-stimulating
• Choleretic
• Antiphlogistic
• Mildly analgesic

Uses approved by German Commission E:
• Loss of appetite ,dyspepsia, supporatvetherapy of degenerative
disorders of locomotor system.

Unapproved uses:
• Devil's claw's tuberous roots are used in folk medicine to reduce
p ain.

Contraindications:
1- Gastric and duodenal ulcers due to the drug's stimulation of gastric

juice secretion.
2- With gallstones, use only after consultation with a physician

3. Roots containing Resin glycosides

They represented by Jalap ‫ – درنة الجلبة‬Ipomeae - Scammony

Uses:
They are all used as cathartic purgatives.
Contraindication:

The resins should not be used in case of intestinal inflammation.
