Astragallus root
Astragallus species, family Leguminoseae
It is used in Chinese traditional medicine, as a general tonic and to
strengthen the immune system.
Constituents:
• Bio flavonoids e.g. astraisoflavone
• Several polysaccharides e.g. astragalan B is the most active.
Uses:
It is used mainly as immune stimulant and cardiovascular disorders.
Echinacea
American Cone Flower, Purple Cone Flower
Dried, whole or cut underground parts of Echinacea angustifolia and E.
purpurea Family Astraceae. Several species of Echinacea are used to make
medicine from is leaves, flower and root.
Constituents:
1. Caffeic acid derivatives.
2. Polysaccharides; Echinacin B (wound healing), PSI and PSII
(immunostimulant).
3. Alkyl amides, flavonoids and volatile oils.
Uses:
• There is some scientific evidence that echinacea can reduce the
symptoms of cold or flu if started when the symptoms are first noticed
and continued for 7-10 days. Reduce the severity and duration of
symptoms associated with cold and flu. Echinacea does not prevent
colds or flu.
