                         Guar gum

Obtained by grinding endosperm of
Leguminosae seed cultivated in India,
Pakistan.

Constituents:
Water soluble galactomannan.

Uses:

1. Useful for managing blood glucose levels as it lowers postprandial serum
   glucose.

2. Promotes weight loss because bulk-forming fibers may impart a feeling of
   fullness.

3. Thickening, suspending agent, tablet binder and bulk laxative.

Guar galactomannan BP is the partially hydrolyzed gum.

Adverse effects:

- Half of those taking guar experience flatulence, which resolves with continued
 use.

- It may affect the absorption of concomitantly administered drugs.

- It has been implicated in esophageal obstruction in-patient who exceeded
 recommended doses.
