How is the phenyl propanoid compounds (aromatic) are
synthesized inside the plant?
They are synthesized via the Shikimic acid pathway. The principle
precursors for compounds (C6 - C3) as cinnamic acid and p-
hydroxycinnamic acid.
In some cases, the side chain may be C1 or C2 to give structure (C6 - C1)
or (C6 - C2), respectively.
Methods for separation of Terpenes Hydrocarbons:
1- Fractional distillation.
2- Preparation of crystalline additive products: (Addition on double
bond):
Hydrocarbons + HCl or HBr, NOCI, NOBr, N2O3 and N2O4 →
Halogenated, Nitrosochloride, Nitrosobromide, Nitrosite and Nitrosate
derivatives, respectively.
• These crystalline adducts obtained are separated and decomposed
giving the pure hydrocarbon.
• The crystalline adducts are very important in the identification as it
affords crystalline material which could be compared with an
authentic specimen (m.p.).
Terpene Hyfdrocarbons may be acyclic (aliphatic and no ring) or alicyclic
(aliphatic and cyclic).
