Camphene

It is an example of bicylic monoterpene hydrocarbon,
Class III: (6 + 5 membered ring).
Source: Nutmeg oil.
Camphene is the only example of solid crystalline terpene hydrocarbon
Uses: In the preparation of fragrances and as a food additive

     Fanchene
Source: French turpentine oil.
Sesquiterpene Hydrocarbons:

- The sesquiterpene, in general, form the higher boiling fraction of the
volatile oils (250-280°C, more viscous).
- They built up of three isoprene units, linked (head to tail).
- The sesquiterpenes are classified into four groups according to the
number of rings present in the structure (Formation of a ring utilizes one
double bond in the process):

Group Double bond Ring

Acyclic 4 No ring
Monocyclic 3 One
Bicyclic 2 Two

Tricyclic 1 Three

1- Acyclic sesquiterpene hydrocarbons:

α-Farnesene ß- Farnesene
