Lesson 8: Chaur Sahib
A Chaur is the fancy fan that is waved above Guru Granth Sahib. Earlier a
Chaur was made of peacock feathers. Now it is made of silken hair.
Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji
Bhai Mardana on Rabab and Bala Ji with Chaur Sahib
The whole point of waving the Chaur Sahib is to show respect for Guru
Granth Sahib Ji. In the old times, a Chaur was used to fan the kings. Sikhs
treat Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the living Guru and true King.
Anyone can do the Chaur. When it is not used, it is placed on a small stool
on the right hand side of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
How to Perform the Chaur seva
1. Wash your hands. Wash your feet if they are dirty. Cover your head
before entering the Gurdwara Sahib
2. Matha Teko to Guru Granth Sahib Ji before doing the seva and ask Guru
Sahib to grant permission to do so. You can say, “Guru Ji please bless me
