Lesson 11: Our 6 Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Ji
Hargobind Ji was born in June 1595
at Guru Ki Vadali, Amritsar. His
father was Guru Arjan Dev Ji and
mother Mata Ganga Ji. One of his
sons, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji became
our Ninth Guru.
When his father, Guru Arjan Dev
Ji was martyred, Guru Hargobind
Ji knew that the Sikhs need to
have the political and military
power to defend themselves and
others. When he became Guru in 1606, he wore two swords. One sword
was for Miri and the other Piri. Miri stands for world power and Piri
stands the spiritual power. Because he wore two swords, he is called “Miri
Piri Da Malik”. Miri-Piri implies that Sikhs have to be saint soldiers.
He constructed Akal Takhat in front of Harimandar Sahib in 1608. He held
meetings with Sikhs in Akal Takhat. Here he listened to complaints from the
people and made important decisions. He adopted the life style of a royal
prince. That’s why Sikhs called him ‘Sachha Patshah’, the True King. He was
also known as ‘Bandi Chhorh Daata’ because he helped free the 52 kings who
were imprisoned by Emperor Jahangir.
