Before passing away Guru Hargobind Ji
appointed his grandson Sri HarRai Ji,
the seventh Guru. Guru HarRai Ji was
born in February 1630 at Kiratpur, in
Punjab. His father was Baba Gurditta Ji
and mother Mata Nihal Ji. He was
married to Mata Sulakhani Ji and had
two sons, Baba Ram Rai and Harkrishan
Ji. His had a daughter Bibi Roop Ji.
Guru HarRai Ji taught Sikhs to respect the environment. He had many trees
and plants planted in many gardens. That’s why his Parkash Utsav is
celebrated as “Sikh Eco-Day”
Because of complaints from some Muslim, Emperor Aurangzeb invited Guru
Ji to visit him and explain some Gurbani. Guru Ji sent his eldest son Ram Rai
to Aurangzeb’s court. Guru Ji instructed Ram Rai to respect Gurbani and to
not show any miracles to please the emperor.
Aurangzeb objected to one line in Gurbani that had the word Musalman in it.
He wanted it to be changed. Ram Rai did not obey Guru Ji because he got
scared of the Emperor. He changed one word in a Gurbani line. When Guru
HarRai Ji heard about this, he was upset at his son. Guru Ji refused to see
him again in his life. This way he left a strong message that Gurbani is a
divine gift and cannot be changed. Guru HarRai Ji made his younger son
Harkrishan Ji as the next Guru.
