Lesson 12: Diwali and Bandi Chhorh Day
There are festivals of lights in the world. Most people celebrate this
festival in the fall/winter. Diwali is an Indian festival of lights. It is
celebrated as a day when good won over evil.
Sikhs celebrate the festival of lights to celebrate Guru Hargobind Ji’s
release from the prison in Gwalior Fort and Guru Ji’s return to Amritsar.
Mughal Emperors did not like Sikhs because of how strong and good they
were. The Sikhs also believed that everyone should live in peace. They
believed that everyone should be able to practice their own religion. This is
not what Mughal rulers believed. They wanted everyone to become Muslim.
Emperor Jahangir had martyred Guru Arjan Dev Ji because Guru Ji was
making Sikh religion stronger and many people were following him. Jahangir
also put many Hindu kings in the prison at the Gwalior Fort. Since Guru
Hargobind Ji was the son of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, he too was put in the prison
for no fault of his. Guru Ji stayed calm. In prison, Guru Ji remembered
Waheguru, prayed and helped other prisoner kings with his wise words. He
spread peace there too. The prisoners liked Guru Ji.
