Finally Emperor Jahangir realized his mistake and he found out that Guru Ji
was innocent. He ordered the release of Guru Hargobind Ji. Guru Ji said
that he would not leave unless the other 52 kings, who were imprisoned
there, were also released.
Jahangir told Guru Ji that all the kings who can hold on to his chola will also
be released. Guru Hargobind Ji had a chola made with 52 tassels, so all of
the kings could hold one and leave Gwalior Fort with him. That is why we call
Guru Ji “Bandi Chhorh” - means the ‘deliverer from bondage’.
Upon Guru Ji’s return to Amritsar, Sikhs were very happy; they were so
happy to see Guru Sahib that they lighted the whole city of Amritsar
including Harimandar Sahib with deevay, the clay oil lamps. Sikhs call this
day as ‘Bandi Chhorh Diwas’.
Even today, Harimandar Sahib is lit with thousands of lights and beautiful
fireworks glow in the sky on Bandi Chhorh Diwas. We remember Guru
Harkrishan Ji and his return to Amritsar.
