Lesson 14: Our 8 Guru, Sri Guru Harkrishan Ji
Guru Harkrishan Ji became eighth
Guru of the Sikhs at a young age of
only five years. He was born 1n July
1656 at Kiratpur Sahib. His father
was Guru HarRai Ji and mother Mata
Sulakhani Ji.
Once, Emperor Aurangzeb of Delhi
invited him in his court. Guru Ji
refused to follow the orders of the
emperor, but the Delhi Sikh Sangat
also wanted to see Guru Harkrishan
Ji. So he agreed to go.
On the way, a proud Brahmin came to see him. He was upset that
Harkrishan Ji was a child and yet respected as a Guru. He wanted to show
the world that Guru Ji did not know anything. He challenged Guru Ji to tell
the meaning of a line from Hindu scripture Geeta.
Guru Harkrishan Ji agreed. He told the Brahmin to bring a person of his
choice. Brahmin was even more excited now.
The Brahmin brought a man names Chhajju who did not know how to read
or write. He had never read Geeta. Chhajju sat in front of Guru Ji. Guru
Ji looked at him and touched his head with his Chhadi (stick). Chhajju sat
up straight. When Brahmin asked him the meaning of a line from Geeta,
Chhajju gave a beautiful answer. Brahmin was astonished at Chhajju. He
could not believe how much he knew. The Brahmin felt ashamed and
became a Sikh. Guru Ji showed that Guru’s grace can transform people.
Even though Chhajju could not read or write, but Guru Ji blessed him with
wisdom.
