ROTARY KALAMASSERY

Many Clubs in the District have their own Club Premises for their meetings but Rotary Kalamassery
MAR has the uniqueness of having their own Community Centre – ‘ Rotary Karmakendra’. In it they have
17 a Anganwadi with about 15 children and a Vocational Training Centre with 15 sewing machines with
regular tailoring classes for women. Another innovative program is Pakalveed – consisting of about
50 volunteers mostly senior ladies. They come to the Centre every Tuesday and indulge in various
activities like singing, storytelling etc and also make their own lunch and tea in the kitchen with
all provisions provided by the Club. It is not only an outing for the ladies but also a day filled with
activities for the children. They also run a weekly Medical Clinic in association St Joseph’s Hospital
through which free consultation and medicines are provided for the general public. During my visit
to Karmakendra had the opportunity to interact with both the children and Team Pakalveed and also
unveiled the portrait of their Past President Rtn. Ramachandran Nair. Recently they have launched
another project – Egg Bank Project , though which 3 eggs per week would be given to 154 children
of 15 Anganwadis which was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister for Industries and Law, Govt of Kerala,
Sri P. Rajeev on 13th November 2021. The idea of giving eggs, a important source of vitamins to the
children was the result of interaction with Rtn. Harikrshna Valmiki of Rotary Secunderabad. Till date
they have given over 8500 eggs and plan to cover more Anganwadis. It is probably first of its kind in
our District. The dynamic team of President Usha Alexander and Secretary Mohan Thampuran along
with Team Kalamasssery are doing a fabulous job. The Club is ably supported by many senior leaders
like Naraynan Memnon, PDG Sunil Zachariah and others. No words are enough to appreciate the
dedication of PDG Sunil especially in his commitment to Rotary E Flash !
