Einstein’s work al so re vealed that space and time are not ab so lutes. They vary ac cord ing to the mo tion of the
ob serv er. If you are mov ing rap id ly past me, and we both meas ure the dis tance and time be tween two
events—a car trav el ing from one end of a street to an oth er, say—then you will ob serve the car to have trav -

eled less dis tance in less time than I ob serve. Conversely, from your point of view, I am mov ing rap id ly past
you, and in your frame of ref er ence, I will ob serve less space and time than you do. Weird? Yes. And al most
im pos si ble for us to con ceive of. Yet nu mer ous ex per i ments have shown it to be true. It is our com mon-sense
no tions of space and time that are wrong. Once again, they are con structs in the mind, and do not per fect ly

mod el what is out there. 142

Einstein went even fur ther, show ing that mat ter was ac tu al ly a form of en er gy. His math e mat i cal
for mu la for this was the fa mous E=mc . An en ti ty with mass ap pears sole ly as a form of en er gy. Peter

Russell has made this state ment:
Even the no tion of mass is ques tion a ble. In his General Theory of Relativity, Albert Einstein showed that
mass and ac cel er a tion are in dis tin guish a ble. A per son in an el e va tor feels light er when the el e va tor ac cel er -

ates down wards, and heav i er when it de cel er ates to a halt. This is no il lu sion, scales would al so show your
weight to have changed. What we ex pe ri ence as mass is the re sist ance of the ground be neath our feet to our
oth er wise free fall to wards the cen ter of the Earth. According to Einstein, we are be ing con tin u al ly de cel er -
at ed, and in ter pret that as mass. An as tro naut in or bit ex pe ri en ces no mass—un til, that is, he bumps in to the
wall of the space craft and ex pe ri en ces a tem po rary de cel er a tion. 144

The relativity of time revealed in the Qur’an

The rel a tiv i ty of time, dis cov ered by 20th-cen tu ry sci ence, was re vealed

1,400 years ago in the Qur’an.
For ex am ple, Allah em pha siz es in sev er al vers es that the life of this world is
very brief. Our Lord has in formed us that the av er age hu man life span is as brief as

“an hour of a sin gle day”:
On the Day He calls you, you will re spond by prais ing Him and think that you have on -
ly tar ried a very short time. (Qur’an, 17:52)

On the day We gath er them to geth er—when it will seem if they had tar ried no more than
an hour of a sin gle day—they will rec og nize one an oth er. . . (Qur’an, 10:45)

In some vers es, Allah reveals that time is much short er than peo ple im ag ine:
He will ask, “How many years did you tar ry on the Earth?” They will say,
“We tar ried there for a day or part of a day. Ask those able to count!”
He will say, “You tar ried there for on ly a lit tle while, if you did but
                     know!” (Qur’an, 23:112-114)
