That was the sit u a tion when we woke them up so they could ques tion one an oth er. One of them asked, “How
long have you been here?” They re plied, “We have been here for a day or part of a day.” They said, “Your
Lord knows best how long you have been here.” . . . (Qur’an, 18:19)
In the fol low ing verse, Allah also re veals an im por tant proof of the fact that time is es sen tial ly a psy -
cho log i cal per cep tion:
Or the one who passed by a town which had fall en in to ru in? He asked, “How can Allah restore this to life
when it has died?” Allah caused him to die a hun dred years then brought him back to life. Then He asked,
“How long have you been here?” He re plied, “I have been here a day or part of a day.” He said, “Not so! You
have been here a hun dred years. Look at your food and drink—it has not gone bad—and look at your don -
key so We can make you a Sign for all man kind. Look at the bones—how We raise them up and clothe them
in flesh.” When it had be come clear to him, he said, “Now I know that Allah has pow er over all things.”
(Qur’an, 2:259)
These vers es re veal that time is rel a tive rath er than ab so lute. It va ries ac cord ing to per cep tion and
the ob serv er, and that fact was re vealed 1,400 years ago in the Qur’an.
Almighty Allah is He Who creates images, sounds, tastes, in short
the whole external world and the perception of time for us, and
Who knows all the entities He has created, and all their situations.
Everything is under His control. Allah’s creation and knowledge
of the status of all things reveals to us the fact of destiny.
