mo ment ap point ed in its des ti ny. The peo ple who would use this vase, where it would stand in which
home, and what oth er ob jects would be stand ing along side it were all de ter mined at the mo ment it was
man u fac tured. Every pat tern on it and all its col ors were de ter mined be fore hand in its des ti ny. The
day, hour and minute when it would be bro ken, and by whom and how, al ready ex ist in the mem o ry
of Allah. In fact, the mo ment that the vase was first made, the mo ment it was placed in the shop win -
dow, the mo ment it was placed in its new home and the mo ment it was bro ken—in short, ev ery mo -
ment in the life of that vase last ing sev er al hun dred years—all ex ist as a sin gle mo ment in the Sight of
Allah. Although the per son who broke the vase was to tal ly un a ware of that event even a few sec onds
be fore hand, that mo ment had al ready hap pened and was known in the Sight of Allah. That is why Al-
lah tells us not to be sad dened by what be falls us. That is because what hap pens is part of on e’s des ti -
ny, and hu man be ings have no pow er to change this. However, peo ple must still learn from des tined
events and, by see ing the wis dom and good ness in them, turn to our Lord, Who cre ates their des ti nies
and Who is in fi nite ly Mer ci ful, Af fec tion ate and Just, and Who pres erves and pro tects His ser vants.
The form peo ple as sume while still an em bryo, their state when they first learn to read and write
and the fit ness they dis play on their 35th birth day and when they re tire are al ready de ter mined in the
book in the Sight of Allah. Human be ings can nei ther ex pe ri ence nor do any thing that is not ap point -
ed in their des ti ny. People heed less of this ma jor truth spend their lives in a state of anx i e ty and fear.
For ex am ple, they con stant ly wor ry about their chil dren’s fu tures, which school they will at tend, what
jobs they will have, their state of health and the kind of lives they will lead. In fact, how e ver, ev ery -
thing from a per son’s ex is tence as a sin gle cell to the time when they first learn to read and write, from
the an swers they give in ex ams to what job they will do in which com pa ny, how many times they will
sign their names, and how and where they will die—ev ery thing is pre de ter mined in the Sight of Al-
lah. All these events lie con cealed in the mem o ry of Allah. For ex am ple, peo ple’s state at this pre cise
mo ment, as a fe tus, in pri ma ry school, at uni ver si ty, first day at the of fice, when they cel e brate their
35 birth day, when they see the an gels at the time of their death, when they are bur ied by their rel a -
th
tives and the mo ments when they ac count for them selves in the Hereafter—all ex ist as a sin gle mo -
ment in His Sight.
Those who sin cere ly sub mit to Allah may hope to at tain His ap prov al, mer cy and Paradise, and
will live in peace and hap pi ness in both this world and the Hereafter. For some one who has sub mit -
ted to Allah and who knows that the des ti ny cre at ed by Him is the most aus pi cious for them, there is
noth ing to fear, or re gret or sor row over. Such peo ple will make gen u ine ef forts, but will know that
these are all in their des ti ny, and that they have no pow er to change what is writ ten in their des ti ny,
no mat ter what they may do.
