mined to im ag ine that there is no need for them to do any thing. Yet this is a ma jor dis tor tion of the
con cept of des ti ny. True, ev ery thing we ex pe ri ence is de ter mined in our des ti nies—be fore we ex pe ri -

However, Allah gives ev ery hu man be ing the feel ing that they are able to al ter events and act in

ac cord ance with their own de ci sions and choi ces. When one is thirsty, for ex am ple, one does not sit
down and wait, say ing,“I will have a drink—if that is in my des ti ny.” One gets up, takes a glass and
drinks. In fact, of course, one drinks the amount of wa ter de ter mined in on e’s des ti ny. But one nev er -

be an aus pi cious el e ment to it.” He will not sit back and do nothing saying “If I am des tined to re cov -

ad min is tered, the drugs he takes, and how ef fect ive these will be—in short, ev ery sin gle de tail—are all
in his des ti ny. He knows that all these events were al ready in the mem o ry of Allah, long be fore he ev -

Allah has re vealed this in vers es:

Him. Yet you still have doubts! (Qur’an, 6:2)

                      . . . Allah’s com mand is a pre-or dained de cree. (Qur’an, 33:38)
