The Miracles of our Prophet (saas)

The word aq sa means "far" or "far thest." The Masjid al-
Haram is lo cat ed in Mecca; the Masjid al-Aqsa is lo cat ed in
Jerusalem. The dis tance be tween them is about 1,235 kil o me tres
(767 miles). Our Prophet (saas) was trans port ed from Mecca to
Jerusalem. The great Islamic schol ar Ibn Kathir says that at least
twen ty-five Companions heard the sto ry from our Prophet
(saas) but that this num ber could have been as high as for ty-
five. The ac counts re port ed by Anas ibn Malik, Abu Hurayrah,
Abu Sa`id al-Khudri, Malik ibn Sa'sa, Abu Zarr al-Ghaffari,
Abdullah ibn Abbas, Abdullah ibn Mas`ud, and Umm Hani are
con sid ered the most re li a ble. According to them, while our
Prophet (saas) was sleep ing in his nie ce's (Umm Hani Abi
Talib) house, Gabriel ap peared to him, put him on a horse
called Buraq, and took him to the Masjid al-Aqsa,
