tion that Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith (ra) had been pon der ing:
Abu Sufyan would sit in a cor ner of the mosque. One day the
Prophet (saas) eft his house, wrapped up in his cloak. From where
he was sit ting, Abu Sufyan said: "I won der how he was vic to ri ous."
The Prophet (saas) ap proached him, tapped him on the back, and
said: "I de feat ed you with Allah's help." Abu Sufyan said: "I bear
wit ness that you are the Messenger of Allah." 82
One had ith about Wabisa (ra) shows how our Prophet

(saas) could un der stand and an swer a per son's si lent ques tion:
Wabisah ibn Ma`bad said: I came to the Messenger of
Allah, and he said: "You have come to ask about de vout ness
(birr)?" I re plied: "Yes." He said: "Ask your heart for a judg ment.
Devoutness is that to ward which the self is tran quil and to ward
which the heart is tran quil. Impiety (ithm) is that which be -
comes ag i tat ed in the self and it goes ag i tat ed ly to and fro in the

breast even though peo ple re peat ed ly give you a judg ment [as
to a mat ter's per mis si bil i ty]." 83
The had iths al so tell us that he knew a per son's ques tion
be fore it was even asked. For ex am ple:
Abu'd-Darda was wor ship ping an idol. Abdullah ibn Rawahah and
Abu Salamah went and broke it. When Abu'd-Darda came and saw
the idol in that state, he could not re frain from ask ing [it]: "Aren't
you ashamed? Couldn't you have de fend ed your self?" Later he
came to the Prophet (saas). Ibn Rawahah saw him on the way and
said: "This is Abu'd-Darda. He must have come to look for us!" The
Prophet said: "No, he is com ing to em brace Islam. My Lord prom -
ised that he would be come a Muslim." 84
All of the above ex am ples show that our Prophet (saas), by
Allah's will, per formed many mir a cles. With this ex cel lent
