2. Christine, can you help with this other team’s project? They need an
extra hand (нужна ещё помощь)? Thanks.
I have to be perfectly honest. I am just full up (загружена) this week and the
next. I’m not sure when you want me to start, but given everything static
(учитывая тот факт, что всё уже запланировано), I don’t think I can take
this on (смогу за это взяться). But it does sound interesting and new and
exciting, so maybe we can work together to see how I could make this work.
3. Christine, do you mind (ты не против) taking notes during this meeting?
(This is a large group meeting).
I had made preparations (подготовку) for this meeting and for the agenda
(для всех вопросов на повестке дня). However, I wasn’t anticipating (ждать
с нетерпением) that I would be taking notes. I am willing (хочу) to
contribute (поучаствовать/внести свой вклад). I just wasn’t prepared, so
unfortunately I am not in a position (я не в силах/это не та ситуация, когда
я смогу) to take notes, but maybe next time. Just give the heads up first.
So how did I think I did? Clearly, after that exercise, I know that I have room
for improvement. So I’m just like, who out there is the expert on saying no?
I really want to talk to them because I have so many questions and I just don’t
want to feel as stressed out (подавлена) as I do at this moment.
I think the earlier career you are, the harder it is obviously, and with more
practice, you just get better. And I’m definitely better at saying no now than
I used to be.
Answer the questions:
1. How would you respond to the first memo?
2. Do you agree with the way Christine answered the first memo?
3. How would you respond to the second memo?
4. Do you agree with the way Christine answered the second memo?
5. How would you respond to the third memo?
6. Do you agree with the way Christine answered the third memo?
7. Is it hard for you to say no in the workplace?
8. What does your boss usually ask you about?
Exercise 324. Read and discuss the facts.
- BMW was an aircraft engine manufacturer: Originally a manufacturer
of aircraft engines, BMW became a car manufacturer after Germany lost
World War I. The Versailles treaty made all airplane companies cease
production. The Versailles Treaty virtually crippled the German economy,
and was a major catalyst of the Second World War.
- Fanta was created in Nazi Germany: After the US established a trade
embargo against Nazi Germany, it became impossible for Coca-Cola
Deutschland to import the syrup required to manufacture their soft drink.
